The Intel Core i7 is a new line of desktop processors based on the new Nehalem microarchitecture, which evolved from the Core microarchitecture which powered the highly successful Intel Core 2 line of microprocessors. Like its predecessors, the new Core i7 processors is manufactured using Intel's 45 nm fabrication process with high-k (hafnium) dielectric and metal gate technology.

The result? A quad-core processor with 8 MB of L3 cache, integrated memory controller and QPI support, all with the same TDP of 130 W of a quad-core Core 2 processor. Amazing, isn't it?

After years of using the codename Nehalem, the new-generation Intel processor finally has an official name - the Intel Core i7 processor! Like previous Intel Core processors, the new processor family will also feature Extreme Edition versions of the processor.

As far back as September and October of 2007, we were already digging up details of Intel's next-generation micro-architecture, codenamed Nehalem. Recently, we managed to lay our hands on insider information on the first Intel desktop processor based on the Nehalem micro-architecture. Codenamed Bloomfield, this processor will replace the quad-core 45nm Core 2 " Yorkfield" processors as Intel's flagship desktop processor. It's the dawn of a new era for Intel. Tomorrow, they will officially launch the new Nehalem microarchitecture, the first microprocessor to be based on it - the [B]Intel Core i7 processor and its attendant chipset - the Intel X58 Expres.
