In my last post about everyone’s preferred music player, I mentioned that I was dying to try out the Linux player Amarok because I’d heard great things about. There’s just one problem: I’m a Windows user.

Who would have thought that Ubuntu would become one of the most popular, or the most popular, Linux distribution in a matter of years ? Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron is out and can be downloaded from the official Ubuntu website. Am I the only one thinking that this naming convention is utterly stupid and causes confusion by new users ? I have two questions that can hopefully be answered by veteran Ubuntu users.

Martin posted back in December about switching to a tripple-boot, having XP, Vista and Linux on the same machine. I myself installed Ubuntu a while ago and am recently switching near full-time to it. One app I really love is Amarok, one of the media players in the repositories.

You can’t ignore the fact that at some point of time, you’ll listen to music on your computer. Whether it’s a CD, mp3, or some internet radio, you have to admit that it’s a great way to keep yourself occupied.
Listening to music only needs a software program that does the needful. This brings me to my question for all the readers. What program do you use to listen to music on your PC? I know it sounds a little strange but I’m curious about preferences of the folks who visit Ghacks.

Winamp has been one of the applications in the past that belonged to a set of software programs that I installed automatically after setting up a new operating system. This has changed in the last two years because I did switch from Winamp to XMPlay which is only using half of the resources that Winamp Lite is using when playing music. (4 MB vs. 10 MB vs. 17MB of memory and 4 MB vs 6 MB vs 10MB of virtual memory)

One aspect of installing Linux has always been a major hindrance for inexperienced users. The fact that you had to partition your hard drives in order to install Linux on your computer. While the procedure itself has become easier it was always mandatory to partition your hard drive. The good news is that this is going to change with the release of Ubuntu 8.

The file hosting website eSnips provides access to various communities that have been created for users with the same interests. You find communities about art and fun but also music. The music community is divided into communities for different music genres like rock, metal or rap.

I do not use a software to tag my mp3 files regularly. I’m not that of a music buff who needs his files tagged properly all the time. One reason could be the small size of my mp3 collection, another that I do not transfer mp3s that often to my mp3 player or Nokia N73 mobile phone. Toe Tag is another nicely looking mp3 tagger with an immense amount of options and functions that is pretty astonishing if you consider that the version is currently 0.1.1.0.

I’m normally not using playlists when I want to listen to music. I either tune into some Internet Radio station or drop a folder full of music in my favorite music player XMPlay. Some of my friends however make a science out of it and create playlists for different moods or situations and they told me about a software that they use to create the playlists.
