We have been writing about great free software programs for more than three years now here at Ghacks and it is finally time to create a list of programs that we can recommend fully to anyone who is looking for a software with that functionality.
It would not be Ghacks if we would not ask you to contribute to that list. The only requirements are that the software has to be free. It does not matter if they are Open Source, freeware or donation ware. If they are free they have a chance to make it on the list.

According to Digital Inspiration that’s the case if you are using Windows XP because leaving the password blank makes it impossible to connect to the computer remotely. Control Running Programs is a new application by the developer of fsLock that serves two purposes: The first purpose is to prevent that more than the defined instances of a program are executed on a system while the second starts an application whenever it is closed on a system. I think that both functions need some explaining,it took me a while to figure out what they are exactly good for.

A left-click on a file opens it with the default application while a right-click offers a menu with the option to open the file with a different application. You get the choice to pick another application that added itself during installation to that menu or to browse your computer for another application not in that list.

Windows XP keeps track of how many times an application has been started by a user of the system and displays the most frequently used programs in the start menu. That’s a pretty convenient feature for some users but there is no obvious way to control which applications are listed in the start menu.
